Fad Diets

Fad diets have dominated our society for many years. The reason they are so widely known and used is because of their “quick fix” nature. However, fad diets are just that a fad. They will help to reduce weight, often in an unhealthy manner but then when the weight comes off there is no sound way of maintaining this restrictive way of eating. So then what happens is the body responds to the restriction by signaling the brain that it needs more food. Essentially the end result is gaining the weight back plus more as the body is unable to turn off the hunger response. This is what we all know as “yo-yo dieting.” If anyone has struggled with weight I don’t have to explain what that is as you have done it many times.

The Essentials to Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is not intuitive as the American Diet has our brains and bodies fooled that fast is better, boxed is healthy and the front of the label gives the low down on the product. However, I am here to tell you that if you are struggling trying to sort through all the information of what is healthy and what is not I completely understand. I was in your position at one time myself. However, I am doing as you are and that is looking for information. Not just any information but information that will help me fuel my body appropriately as guided by science rather than by speed of results. What you must know about healthy eating:

  • Eating the 3 food groups are a must (Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats)

  • You must eat a balance of those food groups so no low carb or Keto diet will do

  • You must eat plenty of fruits and veggies to get essential vitamins

  • Drinking water is important (don’t skip on the filtered or alkaline water)

  • Healthy sleeping habits prepare you for a day of healthy eating

  • You do not have to eat meat and dairy to be healthy

  • Be mindful of low-fat and no-fat labels on food

  • Processed foods are unhealthy and usually full of unneeded carbohydrates and sugar

  • Not all sugar is the same - sugar from fruit is healthy for you; sugar from processed and junk food is not
